Richard Fung | Canada | 2004 | video & sound installation

The latest installation from Richard Fung combines two elements: a 15-minute looped video montage of sky images and an audio environment that includes street noise from Palestine; natural sounds of honey bees and pigeons; and the roar of various military aircraft. Except for a single occasion the sound and image are out of sync. This disconnect furthers the central conceit of the work which is a juxtaposition of the sky as signifier of possibility, freedom and transcendence.

Toronto-based artist Richard Fung is one of North America’s leading video artists and writers on theories of representation. He has been the recipient of numerous awards for his work in video, including the prestigious 2000 Bell Canada Award for Outstanding Achievement in Video Art. Fung was the subject of a 2002 monograph Like Mangoes in July: The Work of Richard Fung, published by Insomniac Press and the Images Festival and edited by Helen Lee and Kerri Sakamoto.
