Over the past few years, some of the most exciting
and popular events at Images have involved an element
of live performance: films projected with live music;
real-time audio-visual performances using digital technologies;
and expanded cinema performances employing multiple
film projections and manual projector manipulation.
This year’s Live Images series includes two nights
of live soundtracks: former Television guitarist Tom
Verlaine & Jimmy Ripp performing to a program
of avant-garde classics by artists such as Man Ray and
Dimitri Kirsanoff, and Montreal’s Shalabi
Effect improvising to 1968’s The Hour of the
Furnaces. Ian Birse and Laura Kavanaugh take up residence
at InterAccess for a week-long installation/performance
called Instant
Places, while Sandra Gibson and Luis Recoder (a.k.a.
the
presstapes) bring us an evening of complex film
projector performances. For our Closing Night Gala,
Winnipeg’s own Daniel
Barrow performs his intimate, low-tech “manual
animation” and UK’s People
Like Us presents the Toronto premiere of her live
archival mixing.
